GUGGENHEIM BILBAO

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO WEBSITE CONTENT

My job was to use the original Portuguese Guggenheim Bilbao site to write fresh copy specifically for English-speaking museumgoers. The site copy for the Guggenheim Bilbao was crafted to convey the unique and vibrant spirit of the museum in my descriptions of its exhibitions, programs, and architectural layout. It was also important to highlight the way that the museum helped to revitalize the city of Bilbao.

The Building Exterior:
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, conceived by architect Frank O. Gehry, is a magnificent example of the most groundbreaking architecture of the 20th century. A landmark of audacious and innovative design, the building is a seductive backdrop for the exhibition of contemporary art. Close to Bilbao’s historic center and shopping areas, the museum connects the river to the city’s classical district, or “Ensanche,” and is surrounded by a series of attractive walkways and squares that make up the Abandoibarra district. Abandoibarra is currently undergoing a face-lift, leaving behind the vestiges of its important industrial past as it is remodeled and integrated into the city of Bilbao. The museum project was a driving force behind the revitalization of this area, and in recent years has helped make Abandoibarra an iconic destination in Bilbao.

Interior:
The museum features bold forms and curved lines comprising a series of interconnecting building shapes, some based on right angles and covered in limestone, others more round and organic looking, but clad in a metallic titanium skin. These spaces are linked by glass curtain walls for remarkable transparency throughout.

History:
Since it first opened its doors in 1997 as part of a major revitalization project for the city of Bilbao, the museum has become an important destination for tourists the world over and the most recognizable symbol of modern Bilbao. The museum’s permanent collection and its ambitious program of temporary exhibitions are exhibited in a dynamic fashion through various presentations that offer the public as many perspectives as possible on the art of our time.
